About

Frank Zwick first discovered the 3D world in early 1987. Starting up with Reflections software on the Amiga 2000 during School, he studied Architecture and later gained a degree in Communication Design. During this time he was always involved and accompanied by the world of 3D.

Since 1994 he has run his own business in Nuremberg, Germany and works for a range of advertising agencies and post production studios. We visualize and animate products, from architecture and cars through to wires and nano particles. His work focuses on 3D visualization and animations. Additionally Frank runs his own motion capture studio since 2008.

Gotoxy renderers of choice are Maxwell, Fry Render and Mental Ray. They also use Space Claim, Z-Brush and Maya for 3D modeling.

HDR Light Studio version 2.0

"I came across HDR Light Studio whilst searching the net for a useful HDRI image for lightning a 3D scene. The application is extremely easy to use and the results are absolutely convincing. Especially the flexibility to move lights around in real time to achieve the desired results is a perfect time safer.

How do you use HDR Light Studio 2.0 within your 3D pipeline?

We have prepared some basic studio-lighting-setups with HDR Light Studio. When we start modeling in MAYA we choose one of these prepared HDRI-maps, which fit best as a starting point. After we have finished the model, we start texturing and assigning materials. The advantage is that we have a rough approximation of the lighting-situation while modeling and texturing. The final step is fine-tuning the light map in HDR Light Studio using the new LiveLight feature for real-time feedback. We import the final HDRI into MAYA, hit render and then enjoy!

Everyone who needs HDRI-maps for lighting knows how time consuming it is to find or construct a well-suited map. So LiveLight is my absolute favorite new feature, because it speeds up the workflow tremendously! I also like the new HDRI and TRANSPARENT background options. Now it is possible to import HDRI-panoramas as background and to make modifications to suit your needs, be it to darken the ground or to add some lights.
